Regardless of your diet and food habits, it is difficult to keep up with the recommended regular intake of 5 a day. However, during the warmest months, we can easily get our nutrients by making a quick and healthy smoothie which is refreshing, yet full of flavours and nutrients.

Whether to kick off your morning or to top up your energy levels during the day, a smoothie is so full of goodness!

I have collected my favourite 5 easy but healthy smoothie recipes for you.

STRAWBERRY, BANANA AND CAULIFLOWER SMOOTHIE

For a while I only made fruit or veggie-based smoothies because I struggled mixing them both together. Then I tried this fruit and vegetable smoothie recipe and it totally changed my perspective.

Cauliflower would not be on top of your list when it comes to vegetables to add to a smoothie but get ready to be surprised because this is a vegetable you can't taste in a smoothie. Its subtle flavour won't alter the taste of the drink so it is a perfect addition if you want to enjoy the naturally sweet fruit flavours while adding some vitamin C, magnesium, fiber, potassium and vitamin B6. In addition, cauliflower gives a very creamy texture to your smoothie.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of frozen cauliflower

1 cup of frozen strawberries (you can swap this for any other fruit you have at home, such as blueberries or anything else)

1 frozen banana

1 1/2 cup of almond milk (or any type you prefer)

1 tablespoon of almond butter (to taste)

Handful of chia seeds

Method:

Blend all ingredients together until you reach a creamy texture. You can decide to add the almond butter for a boost of protein, according to your taste. If you do not use frozen fruit remember to add ice instead.
MIXED BERRIES AND KALE SMOOTHIE
This mixed berry, banana and kale smoothie is delicious and packed full of nutrients. With kale being one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world (it's low in calories but extremely high in vitamins, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, potassium and calcium), you can't go wrong with adding it to a smoothie. Bananas contain fibre and antioxidants which mean they are good for your digestive health and help reduce the risk of diseases. Berries not only add colour and tastiness, they also have anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce the risk of infection or injury. Combined, they make a very enjoyable smoothie!

Ingredients:

1 ripe banana

Handful of frozen/fresh berries (blueberries/blackberries/raspberries/strawberries)

2 handfuls of kale

100ml oat milk

Agave nectar (to taste)

Ice cubes (if berries not frozen)

Method:

Add all ingredients to a blender (minus the agave nectar) and, if you'd like it a little bit sweeter, add the agave nectar to taste. Make sure to add ice cubes if you're not using frozen berries.

Voila! One delicious mixed berry and kale smoothie to enjoy.
CARROT SMOOTHIE
Carrots have many health benefits and are highly nutritious, however few know that they are extremely important in summer. Carrots are rich in beta carotene which keeps us protected from the sun by reversing the effects of UV radiation. In these sunny summer days, this smoothie may be just want you want before heading outside.

Ingredients:

1 sliced carrot

1 apple cut in cubes

1 banana (frozen or room temperature)

½ orange juice

½ frozen pineapple or mango

Handful of ice

Method:

Mix all ingredients together. Regulate the quantity of ice needed based on whether you are using frozen or room temperature fruit.

If you wish to boost the nutrition of this smoothie you can add a tablespoon of any almond or cashew butter.

SPINACH AND APPLE DETOX SMOOTHIE

We all overdo it sometimes and feel we need a bit of TLC for our bodies. Here is a spinach detox smoothie recipe to rebalance yourself.

Ingredients:

2 cups spinach

1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 banana

1 green apple cubed (ideally Granny Smith)

1 cup chopped cucumber

4 dates

1 tablespoon flax seeds

Squeeze of lemon

Handful of ice

Method:

Blend the spinach, almond milk and banana, then add the apple, cucumber, dates, flax seeds, and lemon juice, and blend further until completely smooth.

This is definitely a richer smoothie and an all-year round option. It's a great tasty smoothie idea as it's so creamy and yummy, it tastes like a dessert. Plus it's a great smoothie recipe for kids, too!

Ingredients:

½ cup of Porridge oats

½ teaspoon of cinnamon

2 tablespoon of nut butter (whichever you prefer)

6 dates

1 full cup of milk (any kind you like)

1 frozen banana

½ tablespoon of honey or Agave (to taste)

Method:

Blend all ingredients together. If you have used an unsweetened milk you may want to add honey but do taste it first as dates are naturally very sweet.
